2000 part 1:
2000 a time for respect, peace, love, delight, forgiveness and hope

The Millennium Resolution was prepared by the Churches Together in England as part of their plans to encourage the whole nation to join in a shared moment of national reflection on New Year's Eve 1999.

PLEDGE
"Let there be
    respect for the earth
    peace for its people
    love in our lives
    delight in good
    forgiveness for past wrongs
and from now on a new start"
Simon Thomas, one of the clergy in the Parish of Ashtead explains how he reads the pledge.

Any person, irrespective of religious inclinations, may make this affirmation. However, as a Christian I gain greater insight into the pledge by seeing how these values were expressed in the life of Jesus Christ. I also discover that through a living relationship with God I can see that these values can become a reality in my life.

Human beings are given the task of caring for the world and are accountable to God, the creator of all things. Thus respect for the earth and concern for ecological issues is a necessary consequence of my faith.

Loving relationships are central to the Christian faith. Love for God and for one's neighbour demands action on earth that seeks peace for its people and love in our lives.

For me, and for all Christians, Jesus Christ's death on the cross and his return to life are my source of hope and inspiration that enables me to delight in the good that I see around. It also provides the liberating power that can achieve forgiveness for past wrongs - both as I find forgiveness for the wrong I have done, and am enabled to forgive others for the harm they have done to me.

The living Jesus Christ offers to all people the opportunity for a new start.

At the time of making this Resolution, wherever you happen to be at midnight on New Year's Eve 1999, you may wish to light a candle or have a time of silent reflection. Silent or spoken prayer to God with your family, friends or neighbours may be made for the fulfilment of this Resolution.

We warmly invite you to join us at the New Year's Eve vigil at 11.30pm at St Giles' Church to make this Resolution together as a Christian community.
