'Smiler' and Ken Lane meet Bishop John and Lydia Gladwin

At the age of 101, Ashtead resident Albert 'Smiler' Marshall, has been decorated for bravery by being awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.

Smiler featured in ashtead at Easter 1997 article 'Smiler' - Ashtead's equestrian Centenarian

The decision was taken by Jean-Pierre Masseret, secretary of state for veterans at the French defence ministry. The award is being offered to all First World War Veterans. 'Smiler' collected his award at the Imperial War Museum in London on 7 November.
