To binge or not to binge

The date for the celebration for Christmas has little to do with Jesus' birthday and a lot to do with the winter solstice. The winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, was a time for feasting long before Britain was Christianised. The Christians just introduced a different excuse for bingeing!

We like to bemoan the havoc that an indulgent Christmas dinner wreaks on our health. But recently scientists have suggested that it may now have its positive side: lifting spirits depressed by long winter nights, and fortifying us for the coldest part of winter. Okay, with electric lights and central heating, we may not need a bit of a fillip… but it is a good excuse.
