A day in the Life… Michael Levitton and Pioneering performances at the Theatre
Michael Levitton has seen The Leatherhead Theatre widen its outreach to the local community since he became Managing Director in October 2004. And he hopes this Christmas to continue to draw in local audiences with a spectacular performance of Dick Whittington.

Over the years, the theatre in Leatherhead has closed and reopened, following battles with various financial constraints. It was Pioneer People, a local Christian group, who secured a fifteen year lease, which guaranteed its future.

Ten years of fundraising ensured they had the funds to meet the financial targets. Even now the theatre only manages to survive, thanks to generous donations from the congregation at Pioneer People. They hold a regular service on Sunday evenings, with a lively youth service on Saturday evenings. However, Michael believes it also has an important role to play within local community life.

The auditorium holds theatre and cinema productions throughout the year, with free tea and cakes on offer at select matinee performances, plus film and food evenings. There are discounts at local restaurants if you are going to see a performance at the theatre. There is a crèche, a bar and a café open for use during the week. In addition, the Casson Room and the Green Room have space for conferences and meetings.

Rosemary Bull, a member of the congregation at St George's in Ashtead, who is to become a member of the Board of Trustees, believes "it is a great opportunity to join Leatherhead Theatre as it expands its outreach throughout the local area."

So unlike Dick Whittington, don't spend a fortune in London this Christmas. Why not take the family to see a performance at your local theatre? Visit www.the-theatre.org or contact the Box Office on 01372 365141 for further information.
