| For more than a decade, Ashtead has supported Bishop James Aweyo and his work in Kenya. Now James is visiting Ashtead. | ||
| James lives in Kisumu, Kenya, a village on the shores of Lake Victoria, where he oversees the work of Zion Harvest Mission.
This Christian mission works to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the local community.
Ten years ago, James spent a year living in Ashtead. Since then the church has kept in touch and financially supported his work. Part of this has been to set up Zion Harvest Mission Orphans Support Group (ZHMOSG). "This registered charity now provides money to enable 50 orphans and needy children to get an education," explains Ashtead resident Liz Smart. Most families in Kisumu have been affected by HIV-AIDS or other tragedies, leaving orphans. "The problem now is that the mission has identified another 100 children who desperately need help," says Liz. "It would be great if other people feel that they would like to join us in helping these children." "Its lovely to see James and Eunice again," says church Lay reader Jane Hiley, who went to Kisumu four years ago. James arrived on November 6, and will stay in Ashtead until mid-December. While here he will take part in services and join in the life of the church. "It will be a great opportunity to learn from him and experience his particular style of Christian worship," says Jane.
