Wheels for the World
"Watch this video - 'Wheels to Kenya 2001' and I guarantee that you will be moved" challenges Gillian Russell, the Ashtead churches' representative for 'Through the Roof', the Epsom-based Christian disability charity.
The video shows the project "Wheels for the world", where old wheelchairs are renovated by UK prisoners, sponsored at £30 each, and shipped to developing countries.

In the last 15 months over £1,500 has been raised within Ashtead, sponsoring 50 wheelchairs. The money came through events like coffee mornings, Village Day, the World-Wide Charities Fair, and a charity Day at Palmers' Tea Rooms.

Ashtead was put on the map when Gillian was interviewed on Southern Counties Radio. "We now have a wonderful fund-raising team from the Ashtead churches, including Karen Goodridge, who organises our stalls and sells her wonderful craft-work, Sandie Thompkins, who worked for six months as a volunteer administrator at the TTR office and Jan Trapmore," says Gillian.
