Snap-Shot of Ashtead
Here are a couple of the photographs assembled by the Ashtead Residents' Association for their millennium project last year. 2,250 of these were taken by one man - Albert Pruden, of Craddocks Avenue.

An amateur photographer, he was bitten by the idea of a photographic record of the place where he had lived for 34 years. He started on 1st January, had taken his first picture by 9.13 am and a further 50 (including all the Churches) by the end of that day.

Soon he developed a strategy, which was to take a few each week of different places but in different seasons and weather conditions. He was expecting fog and snow, but the floods were a bonus! There are pictures of every road and street in Ashtead, sometimes several; and of all the shops, sometimes of the same shop in different guises when it changed hands during the year.

Albert says "I was surprised by what I found that I didn't know existed", so if you get a chance to see the collection you are bound to see something new. The Residents' Association are hoping to publish the collection soon, and at the moment it is being scanned and indexed so that it will be available electronically.
