Shopping for Neighbours
The Neighbours in Need shop on The Street is one year old. It is one way of raising money for the Bishop of Guildford's Foundation.

The Foundation was set up in 1993 and supports worthwhile community projects within Surrey and Hampshire. In an apparently affluent area like ours, the plight of disadvantaged people can often go unnoticed.

Among projects currently receiving funds are community and youth workers who support families in trouble on large estates, and family contact centres that allow children who live with one parent to spend time with the other. Other funds help community groups provide holidays and supports play schemes for disabled children. Funds also enable a Saturday lunch club for lonely people here in Ashtead and support work at the Woodlands School in Leatherhead.

"Not always fashionable causes," says local organiser Joyce Gordon, "but ones that are vitally needed - and have a record of success in improving people's lives." The Foundation is always pleased to hear of any local projects that could benefit from this campaign.

The Ashtead shop is the first run by the charity. It is just between the Post Office and Capelands in The Street. It welcomes sorted good quality clothes, books and bric-a-brac and is thrilled by the support it has received so far. The beginning of its second year was celebrated by a visit from Bishop John.

"A noble army of volunteers has seen us through thick and thin this year, but we do need more," says Joyce. If you can spare a morning or an afternoon on a regular basis please contact Joyce Gordon 376619 or Jayne Schofield 01483 304000.
