| Gifts and children are what we think about at Christmas. Education is a gift which will last a lifetime, and that is what some Ashtead residents and their friends are giving to children in East Africa, in three different projects. | ||
David Mitchell-Baker returned last year to rural central Tanzania after 45 years and was moved to support Mtandika Primary School.
Friends and Rotary Clubs in Ashtead and Tanzania are raising £3000 needed for urgent building work.
The (Masai) boy standing in his classroom is still in primary school although 17 years old.
Members of St Michael's Church set up the Action in Africa Trust to help Nyaishozi parish in NW Tanzania, which Peter Exworthy visited. They support 12 girls financially, have replaced the priest's broken down vehicle and have other projects in the pipeline. In Kisumu in Kenya is a church with over 100 orphans, victims of the Aids epidemic. Friends and relatives with whom they live can barely afford to feed them never mind pay for school fees and uniforms. Evans (photo) is 13. His parents died 3 years ago. He lives with his grandfather and can only attend school when funds allow. Often hungry, he needs money for school fees, clothing, books and pencils. Lizzie Smart and the Zion Harvest Mission Orphans Support Group have sent out over £6000. The money is channelled through Eunice Aweyo, the pastor's wife, who visited Ashtead some years ago. You can help too by phoning for more information from David 274276, Peter 275846 or Liz 272120. A little goes a lot further in Africa and many children will thank you for your gift of education. |
