Both Colonel Fulk Greville Howard and his wife, Mary, owned almost all the land in Ashtead and were strong supporters of St Giles' Church. After his death in 1846 Mary continued to support many local projects including the founding of the Church School (now St Giles' School) in 1852.

Subsequent to the OFSTED report, on February 9 1999, St Giles' school was listed in the Chief Inspector for Schools' Annual Report on Quality and Standards and Education as 'having achieved a high performance'. It was amongst only 84 primary schools to do so, out of the 7284 schools inspected, of which there were only 2 other schools in Surrey.
The school is classified as a Beacon School, meaning that it is an example to other schools who want to provide the best quality of education and high standards for all their pupils.
