Good communities care for needy neighbours

Ashtead responds to Bishop's campaign.

Neighbours in need is a campaign run by The Bishop of Guildford's Foundation that aims to identify areas of deprivation within Surrey and support local charities. ashtead at Harvest spoke to Andrea Weightman about our neighbours in need. "As a Church Pastoral Worker, I see need in many forms. My role is to serve those needs within a Christian framework. Many of us can be affected by social deprivation in some way - it may just be that you feel isolated or that you don't belong. A key aspect of Jesus' teaching about relationships is that we care for those people who are in need and the church in Ashtead seeks ways of responding to the need within our community".

A recent report issued by the The Bishop of Guildford's Foundation identified five main areas of deprivation within the parishes of Surrey. These include elderly people; parents, including single parents; bereaved people; people with family or relationship problems and those who are isolated through disability or old age.

The Saturday Lunch Club is an example of how local churches and Social Services are responding to need within the area. The Club meets at the Barnett Wood Lane Youth Centre and is a 'drop-in' centre for anyone who feels in need of company, but especially welcomes those who are suffering with mental health problems. Bernard, a regular at the centre, said he was "very concerned" for the needs of young people. Bernard has lived in Surrey for the past 26 years and is a resident of Ashtead. He has strong views on the problems that young people face today. "During my lifetime, I have worked with young people and seen for myself the pressures that they face. Drugs, homelessness and single parenthood are issues which affect us all".
