Not everyone has 'green fingers' but many love the freshness and beauty of flower arrangements. The Ashtead Flower Arrangement Group, which started in 1955, cultivates home-grown talent with floral design in a winning way. | ||
This thriving and friendly club now exhibits nationally and internationally, and has been honoured with designing floral arrangements on Royal occasions. The Group is part of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies, which celebrates its Ruby anniversary this year. It has also competed at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows.
"Anyone who loves flowers is welcome to join the club", says committee member Barbara Quinlan, and the Group meets monthly for a demonstration by a professional floral designer and a monthly club competition encourages members to use their creative talents. The floral displays are worked from seasonally based themes, like 'Harvest Time' or 'The Glories of Summer.' Recently, the talented members aspired to create a colourful and exotic display from the adventurous title of 'Long Haul Travel'. The club is involved with local Flower Festivals, raising money for charity. All the Ashtead Churches enjoy the expertise that the Group contributes to these occasions. As Barbara explains, "The church is a central meeting place where the peace and tranquillity of floral design may be experienced". The club also contributes weekly displays to the Leatherhead Hospital reception. |
