Ashtead activists - a link in the chain of campaign |
The purpose was to persuade the leaders of the world's eight wealthiest nations to make a serious move towards releasing developing countries from their massive burden of debt.
The gathering was part of the Jubilee 2000 campaign, which hopes to use the millennium as a spur to stimulate action. "The Jubilee 2000 campaign has historic parallels with the anti-slavery campaign. It is a popular movement that has many Christians at the forefront," says Ashtead campaigner Dick Dennys. "Slow change is not enough. These nations need immediate help if they are going to get out of their spiralling debt crisis." Over the next months campaigners in Ashtead are planning to organise petitions and meetings to keep the issue at the top of the local and national political agenda. | |
