Ringing the changes

How about joining in?

Sunday morning in the bell tower
Ringing out - Sunday morning in the bell tower
Bells have been ringing in St Giles' Church since 1724 and the Ashtead bell ringers intend to keep them sounding over the village for a lot longer yet. But they need some new blood to help in the new millennium.

"We ring for 30 minutes on Sunday mornings, and 45 minutes on Sunday evenings. We practice on Thursday evenings from 8.00-9.30pm, and then go for a drink and a chat in the Brewery Inn," says secretary Betty Newman.

"You don't need to be musical or built like Quasimodo, but you do need to enjoy the challenge of learning new skills that are both physical and mental," says ringing master Roger Heyworth.

To find out more, call Betty (272971) or Roger (813355), or climb the tower stairs when the bells are ringing and experience campanology for yourself.
