Surrey Youth and Adult Education

1996 is the European Year of Lifelong Learning. The aim is to encourage lifelong learning, be it in the workplace, in the local community, at home or after retirement. Surrey County Council runs a wide variety of part-time courses, lasting for a term, or throughout the year, or just for one or two days. They are held during the day, in the evening or even at weekends.

Options include:

"Countdown to Christmas", festive food to freeze or store, held on five Tuesday mornings starting in November and

"Surrey Hills and Vales", the geology of the Mole Valley, a Saturday lecture and a Sunday walk and pub lunch.

Ashtead's Townswomen's Guild

The Afternoon Townswomen's Guild meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 2pm in the Ralli Room of the Peace Memorial Hall. Their lively autumn programme includes a talk on bee keeping on 18th September and Howard Davies speaking on the history of Ashtead on 16th October. The Guild has been part of Ashtead life for 63 years now and new members are always most welcome. For further details call 272592.

There is also a thriving Evening Townswomen's Guild, with one of the largest branch memberships in Surrey. They meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.45pm in the Peace Memorial Hall. Their autumn programme includes a talk entitled "An Introduction to the World of Badgers" on 3rd September, a talk about the Bourne Hall Museum on 1st October and a talk about quilts on 5th November. If you are new to the area or have been here for many years, you would be most welcome to go along. For further details call 272631.

Both Guilds also run a wide variety of activity groups which meet weekly or monthly. These include painting, drama, music appreciation, rambling and book and scrabble clubs. These are very popular and provide a very good opportunity to make and meet friends.


Ashtead's Women's Institute

Ashtead's W.I. meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.45pm in the Peace Memorial Hall, Woodfield Lane. For further details call 273139.


Over Sixties Fellowship

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month in St George's Church Hall from 2 to 4pm. If you enjoy good company, the opportunity to meet or make friends, a cup of tea and a chat, then the over sixties fellowship is for you. There's always a variety of fun and entertainment and transport can be arranged for those in need. For further details call 275402.


Ashtead Horticultural Society

The Ashtead Horticultural Society meets in the Ralli Room, Peace Memorial Hall on 9th October and 13th November at 8pm. The talk in October is entitled "30 years at Lime Tree Court", in November it's "Irises around the Year". For further details call 274708.


Ashtead Flower Arrangement Group

The Ashtead Flower Arrangement Group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 2pm in the Peace Memorial Hall. Their AGM is being held at the 4th Sept.


Pre-School Praise

Pram Services are held in St George's Church on the third Wednesday of each month, starting with a craft activity at 2pm. Refreshments are served and the fun finishes at about 2.45pm. All pre-schoolers and their carers are most welcome. For further details call 813978.


Mothers Union

Monthly Speaker Meetings are held at 2.00pm in St George's Room on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Prayer meetings and coffee start at 9.30 am in St George's Church on the first Wednesday of each month. Newcomers are most welcome at any of these events and at the corporate communion services that are held at St Giles Church on the third Thursday of each month at 11.00 am. Ashtead Young Women's Group

Ashtead Young Women's Group provides a meeting point for young women, wives and mothers in the community. Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.45pm in St George's Hall. Come along for a coffee and a chat, everyone is very welcome. For further details call 813491.


Morning Group

The Morning Group usually meets in St George's Room at 10am on the 2nd Thursday of each month. For further details telephone 274855.

Leatherhead Citizens Advice Bureau

The Leatherhead Citizens Advice Bureau has recently altered its opening hours to include an evening session on Thursdays between 5 and 7pm. Thursday afternoons between 1 and 4pm are appointment-only sessions. The Leatherhead Citizens Advice Bureau offers a service of advice, information and support that is free, confidential and impartial.
