Back to School (and grown-ups too!)
September sees the start of the new academic year - not just for schoolchildren but adults too.
Sign Free Computer Training Perhaps you hanker after handling heavy horses, want to gen up on your genealogy, master the use of make-up, learn a language or have a passion for patchwork. There are courses for all these and more on offer through Surrey County Council's Adult and Community Learning Centres. Some last several weeks, others are tasters: one in particular that promises to whet the appetite is a Saturday morning cookery demonstration, the results of which are served as lunch, accompanied by a wine tasting.

Details of courses in Dorking and Leatherhead can be obtained from the centre in Dene Street, Dorking, telephone 01372 832747. Ashtead library also has a wide selection of brochures for colleges and centres throughout the area, together with information on home-study courses.

The Fetcham and Bookham branch of the Workers Educational Association (WEA) includes Ashtead and offers opportunities to enjoy continental antiques, astronomy, calligraphy and family history amongst its autumn programme, as well as more serious subjects such as current and international affairs and learning to philosophise (enquiries to Chairman, Joy Tapping, 457259).

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a learning co-operative of older people no longer in full-time employment, which enables members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities. U3A is one of the fastest-growing organisations in the country; each local branch is autonomous and members often teach themselves within study groups, rather than having a specialist tutor. The local branch in Leatherhead meets monthly and details can be obtained from Rita Chambers 373153. The branch has 350 members (with a small waiting list) and its own website www.leatherheadu3a.freeuk.com where a list of the vast range of topics offered can be found. Other branches are in neighbouring Banstead, Bookham, Dorking, Epsom and Fetcham. Perhaps it's even time Ashtead had a U3A branch of its own?

So whether you wish to learn a new skill or develop an existing one this autumn, why not revive the happiest days of your life and go back to school?
