Why we 'dig' allotments
Rick Saks is typical of many people today - he's started cultivating an allotment. His is amongst 90 others covering 6 acres on the Council run allotment on Leatherhead Road.
Photo Rick in allotment "The reasons people start," he enthuses, "are as many and varied as the ages of people." Some people want the exercise, or to keep active in retirement. Some younger folk want to try out what they've seen on TV and have never had a garden of their own. Most simply want to eat fresh fruit and vegetables that they know how they were grown and how far they have travelled.

Birds and rabbits can be a pest - but the worst are the deer that see it as one large breakfast table. Rick has built a large mesh frame to protect his delicious raspberries.

"Nothing is better than doing some digging after a long day stuck in the car." And to prove his point, Rick digs up some of his favourite Jersey Royals for tea, to be served with mint and a little butter.
