ashtead at Harvest 2005

Lest we forget

Photo Smiler Albert 'Smiler' Marshall lied about his age to enlist in 1915, and survived the Western Front to become the last British cavalryman of the First World War and the last survivor of the Battle of the Somme.

2005 has been a poignant year, with the passing on of this remarkable Ashtead resident. Also, the 60-year marking of WW2 behind us, and Remembrance Weekend ahead in November, compel us never to forget the imperative need for global stability and peace.

This Remembrance is one nationally significant task of the British Legion, which is also active in local communities in a number of other ways. Ashtead's own Branch was recognised at this year's Ashtead Village Day with the Rotarians' Group Award for Community Service.

The Legion in Ashtead ensure regular visits are made to provide friendship to ex-service men and women. Practical help is also given, however, and this takes many different forms. All of this is, of course, in addition to managing the local Poppy Appeal each and every year.

Congratulations to the Legion for all they do - not least for helping us remember.

It's time to thank God once again for Harvest - in the farmers' fields, our own back gardens, and also for those who use one of the council's allotments. One resident tells Ashtead at Harvest why he 'digs' working on his allotment patch
