| The first inhabitants of the Berg houses in the Ashtead Woods estate chose their houses from standard designs that also populated new estates in Hinchley Wood and elsewhere.
Perhaps Berg had it right when they said in their promotional literature of 1936 that 'the call of the countryside - to Ashtead with its woods, leafy retreats and the quiet of evening when the fever of the day is over. The Great Builder has given peace, rest and green days to Ashtead.'
But a community is about more than just bricks and mortar - it is about people.
It is about being comfortable with our surroundings and feeling a sense of belonging.
Most of all, it is about how we live our lives together, what we do for one another and what the community does for us.
