What makes Ashtead so different?
After Leatherhead's recent nomination as having the fifth most boring high street in the country, it was disturbing to read that Hinchley Wood was voted the 49th worst town to live in the UK.

Why should this be of concern to Ashtead residents? The two places have much in common. The development of the Southern Electric Railway led to the rapid growth of both towns in the 1930s.

Perhaps Berg had it right when they said in their promotional literature of 1936 that 'the call of the countryside - to Ashtead with its woods, leafy retreats and the quiet of evening when the fever of the day is over. The Great Builder has given peace, rest and green days to Ashtead.'

But a community is about more than just bricks and mortar - it is about people. It is about being comfortable with our surroundings and feeling a sense of belonging. Most of all, it is about how we live our lives together, what we do for one another and what the community does for us.
