Our local Rotary Club organises the Village Day each year. This year they wanted to promote their ideals of community service. So they instituted two annual awards for community service - one for an individual and the other for a group.
Ashtead Youth Club Rally Kart team and Nobby Clark receive their awards
| Several nominations were received but the individual winner was well known local resident Nobby Clark, for his many years' service to scouting and other local organisations.
The Group award went to the Ashtead Youth Club Rally Kart team for their help to local young people with learning difficulties, particularly at The Bridge.
Nobby Clark has been in Ashtead since 1945 and has been actively involved with the local scouts since he arrived. He has many awards already including the Scout Movement's highest, the Silver Wolf. One of his favourite scouting memories is rescuing two lads off the cliffs at Betchworth, for which his District received a special award, which is still carried on its flag. Nobby is also involved with older people through the Probus club, the Phab club and the Over Sixties for whom he provides transport. Claire Richards, the assistant team manager of the Bridge Kart Team says "Our Kart is maintained and driven by three men with learning disabilities. The Ashtead Youth Club team of Duncan, Phil, Ian, Alex, Warren and Dean (all aged between 14 and 18) and Richard Leary their Youth Worker have provided invaluable assistance to us. They have helped us integrate into the Rally Kart Association and given practical help to get to meetings." Rotary Club President Mike Andrews says "We would welcome nominations from any Ashtead Resident for these awards in 2002."
