St George's Christian Centre

St George's Christian Centre opened in April with a week of celebration that attracted over three and a half thousand people. It is now used for a range of activities.

Initially, only services and children's groups used the Centre, but gradually other church and community groups are starting to come in. "People love it", says Barbara Leighton the Interim Centre Manager.

The complex includes a café, a hall, four rooms of various sizes, and offices. On a typical Wednesday or Friday there may be 50-60 people of all ages enjoying either coffee or a light lunch in the café.

"We want to make good use of our facilities," says Barbara, explaining that their aim is for a balance between regular and occasional use. The church looks forward to hosting many events, from those focussing on a Christian viewpoint, such as parenting courses and Alpha, to lunchtime concerts. However, it has been important to examine how this vision can be fulfilled.

"We have allowed ourselves six months to evaluate how we run our new Centre", says Barbara, "in order to make it an excellent place for all who may come and use it."
