"Here's £10 for you. Either turn it into at least £100 for me, or keep it, if you need it more than African infants with AIDS." This was the challenge issued by charity Hope 10/10 to 15,000 young people last summer.

Dave King, who attends St Michael's in Ashtead, played guitar in an informal Christian band with a group of friends from Reigate. They decided to take up the £10 challenge by using the money to produce and sell a CD. Christening themselves PACE, band members and supporters set about using their various talents in everything from song-writing to persuading professionals to donate their time and facilities.

"The recording was the highlight for me," says Dave. "It took a lot of runs, but when we saw the producer nodding in time to the beat, we knew we must be getting it right at last."

The result was a 3-song CD EP, due for a formal launch in September, at a minimum donation of £4 per copy. With over 500 copies sold in advance, they have already achieved their objective, which "feels very good" says the band.

Hope 10/10 said "We were amazed at the response of young people across the country to this challenge."

Dave will shortly be leaving for Uganda to undertake community work in his gap year before taking up a place at Nottingham University
