Ashtead has a word wiz - resident Jackie Carter competed in three rounds of Channel 4's popular Countdown programme. |
||||
Jackie loves words. She can complete several crosswords over breakfast. So it is not surprising that husband Michael encouraged her to participate in the TV show Countdown. The three rounds were screened on 29, 30 and 31 May. "It was a nerve-jangling experience," says Jackie who tells how she couldn't relax until after she won one round, but then went on to enjoy the next two. Although she feels that numbers aren't her forté, she managed well, but it was with the letters she excelled, making several eight-letter words. Michael had written a poem about "Jackie and Countdown" and Richard Whiteley read it out at the end of the show, while the cameras focussed on the poet for a moment. Jackie came home with three carrier bags of prizes including dictionaries and the coveted Countdown teapot.
