Making their home in Ashtead

Bob and Alison Kiteley arrived in Ashtead with their two children Sarah and Andrew on Monday 15 February, giving themselves five days to get boxes unpacked before Bob formally started work.

As well as an opportunity to celebrate the opening of a new chapter in the life of the church in Ashtead, the service of Collation and Induction gave a chance to think over the foundations of the church.

At one point in the service Bob was taken over to the font where the congregation was reminded that baptism is the outward sign that God forgives sin as we accept his love for us. Bob was then lead to the chancel steps, a focal point in the church were the Bible is read and its meaning for our lives is explained, where marriages are blessed, and the souls of the departed are commended to God's love. Finally he moved to the sanctuary to bring attention to the fact that communion services celebrate that Jesus Christ died for us on a cross and in so doing gave us the opportunity to have eternal life.

The following day Bob faced up to the mammoth task of visiting all eight of the church services that occur each Sunday. He finished the day by giving his first sermon in Ashtead at a choral evensong at St Giles' Church.

Bob's welcome service was called a service of Collation and Induction.
Collation the act of appointing a member of clergy to a benefice.
Induction the act of bringing formally or installing in office.
