Isn't it incredible when the first signs of growth appear each Spring?
I am always amazed when, out of the dark, cold, stone-hard earth appear tiny, delicate green shoots, to be decorated with the porcelain-white petals of snowdrops, or the vibrant, burning orange and purple crocus, or the golden daffodil trumpets announcing the good news that Summer is on its way!
Can you imagine how delighted people must have been in previous generations at the signs of life, after they had struggled through a dark, cold winter without the comforts that we now enjoy in our double-glazed, centrally heated homes? They were obviously justified in their desire to celebrate the new life. Today, Christians all over the world have adopted these celebrations, even in countries where Easter is not in Springtime. Jesus was crucified during Passover time… the Jews' spring festival, and, for a few days the disciples feared for their own lives. The way ahead for them must have seemed dark and cold as they forgot what Jesus had promised. Then on that wonderful Easter Sunday, when Jesus miraculously rose again from the tomb (as he had promised), they were filled with new hope. His promise of a new life was theirs again and they joyfully renewed their desire and determination to follow Him. Easter is a time for us to do the same. Why not come and join us at St Giles', St George's or The Lanes this Easter and discover that the same promise of new life can be yours too. |
