Ashtead's money for African water

In the last two years Ashtead's donations to Christian Aid have amounted to almost £20,000. All of this has been used to help the poor in Lesotho fight for their water.

The highlands of Lesotho have an abundance of rain. Yet the local people do not have enough water. The culprit is a project called the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme, a series of dams which siphon-off the water to supply South African cities and industries. The local people are reduced to using inadequate and unsafe water sources.

"Three years ago we asked for all the money collected in Ashtead to be sent to a support group that monitors and documents requests for compensation made by people affected by the LHWS," says local organiser Betty Waterhouse of Ottways Lane.

If you would like to help in the Christian Aid collection on 11-17 May, please contact Betty on 272595.
