In search of lost time
100 years ago, a time capsule was placed in the West End of St George's Church. As part of the centenary celebrations, it will be opened on Tuesday 18 April, and in its place, a new time capsule will be buried.

Suggestions are required as to what should be saved for posterity, as a true representation of life in the Parish of Ashtead in 2006. This will be opened in 2106 at the next centenary service.

All suggestions will be displayed at St George's during the week of the celebrations. Each item chosen will be duplicated and recorded for future reference. Those items selected for inclusion will be placed in the time capsule on Sunday 23 April.

On first thought, newspapers and CDs seem the obvious choice. However, due to corrosive substances, certain materials cannot be used. A special archival quality paper must be used to record the contents and this will be provided.

Furthermore, objects that contain acids, PVC, wood, batteries and rubber cannot be used. No natural substances, either animal or vegetable will survive. In addition, textiles and metals should be clean of corrosive waste products. Any electronic items run the risk of not having the technology in a hundred years time to function properly.

Any recommendations are welcome and should be submitted by Sunday 9 April to Bruce Tucker, contact telephone 272571. Why not save the present for the future before it is lost to the past?
