A century of service - a new century of success

and service is great cause for celebration.
In 100 years, Rotary has grown from a small club of four members to a worldwide network of men and women who share a common vision for a better world. It was founded in Chicago in February 1905 by Paul Harris. The name Rotary was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.

The world's first service organisation, Rotary has a long history of helping those in need and uniting people of different cultures and beliefs. Through the work of individual Rotary clubs and through the programmes of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, Rotary is making the world a better place.

In Great Britain and Ireland there are about 59,000 members in more than 1830 clubs. In the last year more than £20 million was raised by Rotarians in the British Isles for charitable causes. In addition Rotarians gave more than 14 million man hours of service in support of community projects at a local, national and international level.

The Rotary Club of Ashtead first met in 1980 and for all but one of the last 22 years has organized Ashtead Village Day, which this year will take place on Saturday 11 June.

Simon Ling, chairman of the organising committee, is delighted with the support being received from everyone including local businesses. "This will help to make Ashtead Village Day 2005 better than ever.

A procession of veteran and vintage vehicles will leave The Street at 12 noon for the Barnett Wood Lane Recreation Ground where there will be a full programme of events and entertainments from 1pm."

Ashtead Village Day brings together the charities, societies, clubs, schools and people of Ashtead in celebration of the village and its traditions - a fine example of the Rotary ideal of service to the community
