"The title Reader originated about 350 years ago," Peter informs, "when literate persons were appointed to read the lessons in church."
Today the title Reader is a misnomer and because of this many dioceses have adopted the title Licensed Lay Minister.
Peter was initially licensed by the Bishop of Colchester and served in Holy Trinity, Springfield, Chelmsford from 1955 to 1958. He went on to Holy Trinity, Hermon Hill, South Woodford from 1958 to 1961, followed by serving the Parish of Wickford, Essex from 1961 to 1969. He came to the Parish of Ashtead in 1969. Today the primary duties of Readers are to preach and teach, and to conduct or assist in worship. For Peter this has meant preaching approximately 1000 sermons and, since 1988, taking 650 funerals. These days Peter mainly ministers at the traditional services - Matins and Evensong at St Giles' Church - but his duties also take him further a field. | |
| "I continue to serve as duty chaplain one day a month at Guildford Cathedral from April to October," Peter enthuses,
"a wonderful opportunity for outreach to the many visitors from home and abroad."
He also visits Leatherhead Hospital and administers Holy Communion to the housebound and those in nursing homes.
"It is a busy ministry - but very fulfilling. And so on this 50th anniversary of my admission as a Reader I give heartfelt thanks to Almighty God for giving me the opportunity, health and strength to carry on His work here on earth." |
