Bowls at Ashtead
When Sir Francis Drake looked down on the Spanish Armada at Plymouth Hoe 400 years ago while playing bowls, he could hardly have imagined how popular the game would become in the UK.

Ashtead Bowling Club is no exception and has a thriving membership of approximately 85 men and 55 ladies. There is also a small but enthusiastic junior section.

Last summer around ten to 12 youngsters practised regularly and some joined the Monday club night. There are also Ladies' nights on Wednesdays and Gentlemen's nights on Thursdays while matches in the Surrey league also take place during midweek.

The green will re-open on 17 April until the end of September and, if Ashtead is blessed with the same weather as last summer, it promises to be a busy season.
