Rianna's Children's Home in Kenya
- a step closer following visit by Ashtead residents
Plans to establish an orphanage close to Kenya's third largest city came a step closer to fruition in February following a visit by Ashtead residents.
The ten-day fact-finding visit provided an opportunity to catch up on the work of the Zion Harvest Mission (ZHM) and its Orphans Support Group (ZHMOSG), which has had a close link to Ashtead Parish Church over the past decade.

The team, led by Malcolm Leighton, included Youth With a Mission partner Jeremy Weightman, Simon and Lizzy Smart and Stephen Davenport and Paul Bessick representing Rianna's Fund.

They spent ten days based in Kisumu, on the banks of Lake Victoria, and visited Yala (60km NW of Kisumu), where funds raised by Rianna's Fund are to be spent creating a new orphanage for approximately 30 children and expanding an existing two-class nursery school on the site. Rianna's Fund will continue to raise funds to run both the orphanage and the nursery school.

 Working in close partnership with Rianna's Fund, ZHMOSG will be able to educate more orphans and part of the Yala site will continue as a community centre, supporting vocational training and meeting the needs of the local church.

Malcolm Leighton said the recent trip had been very encouraging. "The trip enabled us to acquire a site for the creation of the new orphanage, to review existing educational projects that we have been supporting as a charity since 1999 as well giving support for Bishop James and Eunice Aweyo and their 70 churches throughout Kenya."

Debbie and Steve Davenport expressed their gratitude to all those who have supported them and the trust fund over the last year. "We have been sincerely touched by people's generosity and hope that together we can continue to provide hope for needy children."
