In January John Hanks of Stag Leys broke the record for the highest that anyone had reached on Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair - he reached 17,750 ft.

John has Spina Bifida but this has not prevented him from competing in top level Marathons.

Accompanying John were Gaynor Gibbins of Ashtead Woods Road, mother of two severely disabled adults, two colleagues from the Leatherhead Swans, a doctor and five members of Surrey Ambulance, all taking up the challenge to climb the 5,895m/19,340ft peak to raise funds for Leatherhead Swans, a charity in aid of people with disabilities.

"The whole trip was a never to be forgotten experience with many happy and funny memories and great teamwork. I felt that I had achieved my aim, knowing that I had such great support back home from all the people that sponsored me." The total so far raised as a result of this expedition is over £7,000.
