New Stepney Youth Worker makes for Open Country
Karen Honeysett is determined that disadvantaged children should have access to outdoor activities.

One of the ways in which the Ashtead parish maintains its links with the Borough of Stepney is by funding a youth worker. When the post fell vacant recently, the advert caught the eye of Karen Honeysett. At the time she was working at an outdoor centre in North Wales, while deciding how best to put her degree in Sport and Education to practical use.

Karen recalls her first session very clearly. "As a country girl myself, I was amazed to discover how much fun inner-city children got from simply running around in the mud." In post since December, she is already planning a series of residential trips for children to experience the joys of canoeing, archery and walking at Gilwell Park.
