School's 150th Birthday Celebrations
Most people already know that 2002 marks the Queen's Golden Jubilee. "Here in Ashtead we also have our own celebration to prepare for. St Giles' School, the Parish's own infant school, celebrates its 150th Birthday next year," says governor Chris Hunt.

It was in 1852 that the efforts of the Parish, and the generosity of Mary Howard, resulted in the school bell being rung for the first time. Today the school is a caring centre of educational excellence.

"We believe that there must be many former pupils who still live in Ashtead. The school is trying to locate such people. If you went to St Giles' School, please contact the Parish Office and your details will be passed on," says Chris.

The school is hoping to celebrate its special birthday in several ways. "With the help of current and former pupils we are sure that this important part of Ashtead's community will find ways to both celebrate its past and current roles, and ensure that future generations will also benefit from its caring Christian approach to education," says Chris.
