Ashtead resident Sarah Kirby had expected the crocodiles, but baking a cake on a barbecue was an initiative test.
Sarah is spending her gap year in Uganda with Youth With A Mission. It's a very different lifestyle to Ashtead - collecting rainwater from her roof for washing and sharing her mosquito net with the local bats. During the day she helps at a health clinic, weighing babies, keeping records and painting the school. The cake was a gift for the local children's home. Travel is by "very unstable" boats, through allegedly crocodile-infested waters, although she suspects a wind-up. She has also enjoyed sharing in local Christian worship, and on one occasion found herself speaking to 150 people. "I have really learnt from the joy of the Ugandans," says Sarah. "Their passion for Jesus is amazing." |
